How Do You Play Caribbean Stud Poker?

Before the game kicks off, each player taking part in the game must place a bet. This wager is called an ante. The Caribbean Stud Poker table has a specific area where every player can put their bets. The dealer will signal when they do not accept any more bets before they can deal cards.

Players will be dealt five cards each, all face down. Then, the dealer will proceed to reveal one of their cards. Thereafter, players will have the opportunity to look at their cards and decide to either raise or fold. The decision will be based on the combination of cards each player has.

If you have a strong Caribbean Stud Poker hand, you can raise by adding more money equal to your original ante. In the same vein, you can fold and forfeit your ante if you do not have a strong poker hand.

Once each player has made their decision, the dealer will turn the remaining four cards face up and compare their hand against all the players. There are conditions that allow the dealer to play. The dealer is eligible to play if they have an Ace, a King, a pair or a higher-ranked hand. You will only win the ante and the raise if your hand is higher than the dealer’s hand.

The rules of the game are pretty easy to follow. Every player taking part in Caribbean Stud Poker plays against the dealer. Each online poker room will have a table limit specified. Players will have to meet the table ante before the game begins.

In addition, Aussie players cannot bet or hold multiple hands at the table. It is important to adhere to the instructions of the dealer. When the dealer announces that no more bets can be placed on the table layout, you have to follow the instruction or have your bet removed.

As already stated above, you can only win if you have a better poker hand (five-card combination) than the dealer’s hand. If you have tied hands, the push and no action.

As in all poker variations, not all hands are the same. That means that the payout for a higher-ranking hand will payout more than a lower-ranking hand. Here’s how the poker hands are ranked:

History of Caribbean Stud Poker

David Sklansky is a professional poker player credited to have invented Caribbean Stud Poker back in 1982. However, back then it wasn’t known by the same name. At the time, it went under the name “Casino Poker”.

The original game had different rules to the game played in casinos today. The dealer had two cards face up instead of only one. Additionally, that game did not have a progressive jackpot.

Part of the reason for the name change and different rules is that Sklansky could not patent the game in its original name, “Casino Poker”. According to the history books, it was due to patent laws. A couple of years later, he was approached by a poker player who brought the game to The King International Casino in Aruba (now known as Excelsior Casino) and had it patented.

The owner of the casino and the poker player changed the rules slightly to create what is currently known as Caribbean Stud Poker.
